Quite a while back I was sent some superfood blends and raw snack bars from the twinned brands Love Raw and OrganicSuperBlends, so I’ve now had plenty of time to test them and review them more accurately for you guys. Here we go!
Love Raw is a UK-based company founded by Rimi out of her desire to make eating on-the-go easier for those of us with different dietary requirements, or simply for those looking to make healthier choices even when travelling. This idea led to the creation of the Love Raw bars and superfood blends – all of them are vegan, gluten and soy free, and composed entirely of natural ingredients such as fruit, nuts, seeds and superfoods. Even better, both the bars and blends use organic ingredients.
I’ll talk first about the oh-so cute snack bars. As well as being organic, these are packaged in paper rather than plastic, making them even better for the environment as they can be recycled. I loved this simple fact as I’m always looking for ways to reduce my negative impacts on the environment, plus they looked adorable too.
On a more health-conscious note, for any readers who try to follow a part or fully raw lifestyle, these bars are one to buy! The company recognised that cooking food can lead to the loss of up to 30% of its nutrients, so the bars are all slow dried to retain these vitamins, making them completely raw.
As for the flavours, there are four on offer. Whilst a couple were designed with cacao addicts in mind (of which I am a self-confessed sufferer), there were also bars that had a completely different taste too.
Cacao & Maca – This contains four superfoods: cacao, maca, chia and cacao nibs. Maca is known for its ability to balance hormones and also provide energy, so have this at breakfast time in place of your morning coffee and you’ll feel ready to take on the day.
Another reason to take this is precisely due to its cacao content: we all know the mood enhancing properties of chocolate, but the antioxidants in the form of flavenols and polyphenols that it also contains have been shown to slow the aging effects of free radicals, or even prevent illness.
The flavour of this first bar was nice and chocolatey, and sweet but not overly sweet. This was a nice surprise as it wasn’t at all overpowering, plus the texture was quite like a brownie which was a definite bonus if you fancy a change from crunchy granola bars.
Cacao and Spirulina – Sticking to the chocolate theme for now, this flavour contained not just a rich cacao taste, but also a sharp hit of cold pressed orange oil that added a nice kick of flavour – I really enjoyed it. The crunchy chia seeds made the texture more interesting as well.
I really enjoyed the taste of this one, so the fact that is also packs in some great health benefits is a great plus point. Spirulina is an excellent source of protein and vitamin B, so for those of us wanting to ensure we get enough of these then it is an excellent choice. Even better, the B6 vitamin and rich source of iron in this algae support the immune system to keep you feeling great.
Coconut and Chia – Chia is again used here, which is a great source of protein and omega-3s. Couple that with the fatty acids found naturally in coconut and you have a recipe for glowing skin right at the end of your fingertips.
I liked the subtle coconut taste but also the hint of cinnamon flavour, which went nicely with the pop of the dried fig seeds.
Rosehip Lemon – Rosehip is a great source of Vitamin C, with up to 60% more than some citrus fruits. In addition, it is known for its excellent healing benefits due to the vitamins E and K that it contains, which speed up the body’s natural healing process.
The flavour of this bar was slightly tangy, with the sweet rose balanced nicely by some citrusy lemon – subtle but very refreshing, I’d say this was my favourite, and is a perfect alternative when upi need energy but aren’t in the mood for cacao.
Now onto the superfood blends! These are all chia-based mixes of a variety of superfoods, so you can get multiple health benefits in just one product. All of these are again organic, vegan, gluten, dairy and soy free, and raw.
I found the blends really easy to incorporate into my diet, as they can simply be spooned into the blender alongside other ingredients or just stirred into oats and other dishes as they cook. Their very fine powdery texture ensures that they are always evenly distributed so you don’t end up with a big kick of flavour in a single mouthful, and the re-sealable bags are a lifesaver as I didn’t have to transfer them to an airtight container.
Even more fun is the fact that each packet comes with a different recipe on the back, made by some true superstars of the health food world – the lovely Deliciously Ella and Madeleine Shaw shared their smoothie secrets on the two that I received.
Alkaline Greens – This is a mix of chia, spirulina, wheatgrass, chlorella, kelp and nettle. I found that this one was best suited to green smoothies and juices, or stirred into banana ice creams for a hint of colour and load of goodness. However, I did make a tasty guacamole recipe with this and it went down a treat!
It has a mild taste compared to some green superfoods due to the balance of ingredients that prevent the algaes (spirulina and chlorella) from having an overwhelming flavour, so is a good started supplement for those who aren’t keen on drinking pond water.
Omega 3 – This is a blend of chia, maca, lucuma, hemp and baobab. For this reason it’s perfectly suited to sweeter dishes, and it does indeed have a mild, sweet taste that adds a nice hint of spice/caramel to your recipes. I used mine in everything from smoothies to oatmeal or snack bars.
Thank you again to these guys for letting me try out their goodies – if you’re tempted to try them yourself you can buy the Love Raw bars here at www.eatloveraw.com and find the blends at www.organicsuperblends.com
