Acai is possibly the most well-known superfood, and fortunately for us this means it is also very well studied. Originating in the Amazon rainforest, this berry has an extremely high ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value: the one from Organic Burst has a value of 70,000, three times that of the goji berry and ten times that of blueberries! This value reflects its ability to mop up the free radicals that damage your body and cause oxidative stress. This also makes acai fantastic for your skin’s health, and it can even reduce bad LDL-cholesterol as well as provide essential fatty acids. If you want to glow from the inside out, taking acai is a good place to start!
I fell in love with acai bowls whilst abroad, and I maintain that it is the best way to get your acai hit. Whilst you can add capsules to smoothies, oats, or simply pop them with a glass of water, an acai bowl really is a good way to indulge and treat your soul as well as your body. Here I’ve shared my basic recipe that’s perfect if you’re new to this superfood, but you can vary the fruits used and quantities to see what new combinations you come up with!
2 large frozen bananas (peeled and sliced before freezing)
1 cup frozen blueberries
½ cup almond milk
2-4 acai berry powder capsules – (I use Organic Burst as they are of excellent quality and even help local communities to thrive too)
Generous pinch dried/fresh mint leaves (optional)
Toppings – Fruit, nuts, granola, maple syrup all work well
Preparation time: Freeze bananas and blueberries overnight, then 5 minutes preparation when you’re ready to eat it
1. Peel and slice the bananas, then freeze these as well as the blueberries overnight.
2. Add all of the ingredients to a food processor in the morning. When you add the açaí split the capsule open and just pour in the powder within, then blend everything together until it forms a smooth consistency, like banana ice cream.
3. Transfer to a bowl and top liberally, then enjoy your antioxidant antidote.
